The Ultimate Thrifting Guide, Part II
I didn’t have a chance to feature all your thrift shop recommendations in my recent thrifting guide, so here’s a Part II! Basically, I’m always looking for any reason to write about thrifting.
Address: 869 South Pickett Street, Alexandria, VA 22304
Most of us have heard of Habitat for Humanity, but if you haven’t shopped there, you’re missing out, reader Carmel Richardson tells me. She found a tufted leather couch in great condition at the Alexandria location (there are two others in Herndon and Chantilly).
“Great for big pieces of furniture, though not much else,” Carmel says.
According to Habitat ReStore’s website, you can also find appliances, cabinets, rugs, hardware, electronics, and even video games at its stores.
Address: 4816 Boiling Brook Pkwy, Rockville, MD 20852
I will admit that I have not been to this Goodwill before, but it comes recommended to me by reader Emma Freire, who has found everything from a favorite Swiss dot blouse to rare toys. If you are in Maryland, you will want to check it out!
“I got this toy wooden mushroom house that was originally made in Germany. I'd been looking for a toy like this for my children for years already. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found one at Goodwill,” Emma says.
Her one warning about this Goodwill location? Don’t expect great customer service, but do expect to find lots of unexpected treasures.
Address: 2860 Annandale Rd, Falls Church, VA 22042
Okay, so I already reviewed this store in Part I, but reader Jackie Bastasch sent in some great finds from Clock Tower that I just had to include! Jackie says she got an especially good deal on the vintage Candy Land game — she paid $3 while similar vintage games go for upwards of $70 on eBay.

Interview with Tiffany Haverly
This week, I’m excited to introduce you to Tiffany Haverly, a veteran of Capitol Hill and new mama to her daughter Charlotte! Connect with Tiffany on Twitter here.
What do you love about your neighborhood?
I live in the Hillcrest neighborhood in Southeast DC. My neighborhood is one of the hidden gems of the city when it comes to residential neighborhoods. I love the wooded walking trails and my big backyard!
What does your life look like right now?
I recently came back to Capitol Hill after a brief hiatus, but my absolute favorite thing about life right now (and probably forever!) is my 1-year-old daughter, Charlotte. Spending time with her is my top priority.
What's your favorite coffee shop or restaurant in DC?
Oh gosh — during COVID my husband really stepped up our home coffee game, so I drink coffee from home most mornings. He grinds up single origin beans every morning for our Chemex — it’s seriously hard to beat! I do love Peregrine Espresso in Eastern Market and Gregory’s in Navy Yard.
As far as restaurants go, I recently had a wonderful dining experience at The Point, and I find Lupo Marino to be reliably delicious! I lean heavy on brunches these days (hello, toddler bedtimes) so dinners out are a rare treat in my house! The Roost is a great family-friendly-but-still-fun spot.
What's something you have learned as a new mom in DC?
There is a really wonderful community of moms here. So many women have shown me so much kindness as I’ve navigated my first year of motherhood. DC can be a challenging place to raise a family, but I’m so grateful for the community of parents here — it’s truly something special.
What’s your beauty routine like?
I keep it pretty simple: cleanser (x2), serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. I always wear sunscreen - the sunscreen in your makeup is not enough! I wish I was always as diligent about wearing sunscreen and going to bed with a clean face as I am now. Ladies: do not sleep in your makeup and PLEASE layer on that SPF! Every day!
The Haps
The Circle of Life
The saga of the mama fox terrorizing Capitol Hill has come to a sad end: the fox was euthanized and ended up testing positive for rabies. But before that happened, we got to glimpse a rare moment of bipartisanship on Tuesday as Republicans and Democrats alike hoped that the fox would be able to return to her kits. There was even a campaign to #FreetheFox complete with merch. But sadly, sometimes even we city slickers in DC have a brush with Mother Nature’s harsh reality.

Don’t Rain on My Cherry Blossom Parade
Luckily, the chances of precipitation are looking pretty slim for the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade on Saturday. This year’s parade looks like it will be a lot of fun — read about the lineup (and road closures) in this article The DCist. Sadly, peak bloom occurred back in late March, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate the arrival of spring!
